Where I Stand (February 1st-isty-ish-y Edition)

Yeah, I'm behind on this - I've even watched a movie already this month. Eeep.

So I ended January with 428 movies watched. 12 of these movies watched in January. I should get a bit of extra credit for the D.W. Griffith epics, but that's not how this task works.

Onto the favorites:

Bringing Up Baby
: Oddly, such a flop that nearly everyone's career was on life support after the film. Anything where Kathrine Hepburn can drag a feral leopard through the city streets in a ballgown while everyone worries about how she'll take care of herself is great stuff.

Tokyo Story
: Every year, movies and television set out to show us how we fail to reconnect with our parents. Most of the time these movies attempt to make their point with the subtlety of a sledgehammer. Tokyo Story weaves this story and when you wait for the story of redemption to kick in, you realize that there's yet another thing that's sorely wrong with the way that we present the path to easy redemption. Of course, the film has to put all of these layers in and "depth" so it's not all a single depressing note either...

Gentlemen Prefer Blondes: There should be a law against anyone redoing any of the musical numbers Jane Russel and Marilyn Monroe did from this film. All film starlets that think they're doing "sexy" should be required to study Jane and Marilyn to see how it's done as well. Women can be sexy, brainy and have a best friend that is actually not there just to deliver up softball lines or be the less attractive one. Did I mention the musical numbers?
